Audi A1 VIN Decoder, VIN Number Location and PR Codes

Find the VIN on your Audi A1, read what it tells you, then decode the PR codes from the data sticker to get the full factory options list.

The A1 was built for the UK and European markets and never sold in the US, so free VIN decoders built on US data usually come back empty for it. The VIN structure and PR codes below work on every A1. For other models, start with our Audi VIN decoder.

Audi A1 VIN number locations

Where Is the VIN Number on an Audi A1?

Every Audi A1 carries the same 17 character VIN in several places on the car and on its paperwork. Check that at least two of them match before you rely on it.

On the car

  • Bottom corner of the windscreen, readable from outside
  • Vehicle data sticker in the spare wheel well, under the boot floor
  • Stamped into the body in the engine bay
  • Label on the door pillar on some cars

On the paperwork

  • V5C logbook in the UK, or registration and title documents elsewhere
  • Vehicle data sticker inside the front of the service book
  • Insurance documents
  • Service invoices and the original sales paperwork

If the VIN on the windscreen doesn't match the logbook or the body stamping, stop there and find out why before you go any further.

How to Read an Audi A1 VIN

Most A1 VINs start with WAUZZZ. The three Z characters are filler used on European market cars, so the useful parts are the model code in positions 7 and 8 and the model year letter in position 10.

Positions 1 to 3: Manufacturer
WAU identifies Audi as the maker.
Positions 4 to 8: Model
ZZZ is filler. Positions 7 and 8 are the model code: 8X for the first generation A1 and S1, GB for the second generation.
Position 9: Check digit
Used to validate the VIN on some markets. On many European cars it doesn't follow the US check digit formula, which is one reason US decoders reject them.
Position 10: Model year
A single letter for the model year. See the list below.
Position 11: Plant
The factory that built the car.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The production number that makes this VIN unique.

2018 cars can be either generation, so check positions 7 and 8 as well.

Can You Get Audi A1 PR Codes From a VIN?

Not from the VIN itself. The 17 characters tell you the model, generation and year, but not the options.

The full option list is stored against the VIN in Audi's factory system, so any Audi dealer can pull it with your VIN. If you'd rather do it yourself, the same PR codes are printed on the car.

Spare wheel well Easiest

Lift the boot floor. The vehicle data sticker lists the VIN, paint code and every PR code on the car.

Service book

An identical sticker sits inside the front cover. Handy if the one in the boot is damaged or missing.

Audi dealer

Give the service desk your VIN and ask for the vehicle data printout. It shows the original build and every factory code.

VCDS or OBD11

A scan tool reads coding from the control modules. Good for confirming specific equipment, but it won't give you the full PR list on its own.

Grab the codes from either sticker and paste them into the decoder below to get your full Audi A1 options list.

Audi A1 PR Code Decoder

Paste the codes from your data sticker and get a readable A1 options list, grouped by system.

Separate codes with spaces, commas or new lines.

Look up a single code

Search by code or keyword. Covers PR codes, paint, engine codes and wheel part numbers.

Type a code or keyword to see matches.

Tip: click any code to copy it. Some codes change meaning by model year and market, so check anything important against the dealer printout.

Which Audi A1 Do I Have?

Positions 7 and 8 of the VIN tell you the generation straight away. That matters because an early 8X and a late GB are very different cars to own, even with the same badge on the boot.

VIN code 8X

A1 8X (2010 to 2018)

First generation, sold as a 3 door and a 5 door Sportback. Small TFSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, simpler option lists. Engine code and service history matter more than equipment on these.

VIN code 8X

Audi S1 (2014 to 2018)

Part of the 8X range but a different car: 2.0 TFSI, quattro and a 6 speed manual only. It shares the 8X model code, so confirm a genuine S1 through the engine code, the quattro PR code 1X1 and the dealer printout, not the badges.

VIN code GB

A1 GB (2018 onward)

Second generation, 5 door Sportback plus the raised Citycarver. Badged 25, 30, 35 and 40 TFSI. Spec varies a lot on these, so digital cockpit, lighting and assistance options can matter as much as the engine.

YearsGenerationCommon enginesCommon trims
2010 to 20188X1.0 TFSI, 1.2 TFSI, 1.4 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI, 1.4 and 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDISE, Sport, S line, Black Edition
2014 to 20188X S12.0 TFSIS1, S1 Sportback
2018 onwardGB1.0 TFSI (25 and 30 TFSI), 1.5 TFSI (35 TFSI), 2.0 TFSI (40 TFSI)Technik, Sport, S line, Black Edition, Vorsprung

S line, Black Edition or Vorsprung?

This is where A1 listings go wrong most often. Bumpers, wheels, black trim and badges can all be fitted after the car leaves the factory, and plenty of A1s wear S line or Black Edition parts they weren't built with. The VIN alone won't settle it. The PR codes on the data sticker, or the dealer printout, will. If a car is priced like a higher spec A1, the codes should prove it.

Audi A1 Engine, Gearbox and Drivetrain: What to Check

Once you know the generation, the engine and gearbox combination tells you most of what you need about running costs and risk.

Engines

Most A1s run small turbo petrol engines: 1.0 TFSI 3 cylinder, 1.2 and 1.4 TFSI on the 8X, and 1.5 TFSI on the GB 35 TFSI. Some 1.4 and 1.5 TFSI engines have Cylinder on Demand, which shuts down two cylinders at light load. Diesels are 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI on the 8X only.

Gearboxes

Manuals are 5 or 6 speed. The common automatic is the 7 speed S tronic DQ200, a dry clutch gearbox with a different reliability record from the wet clutch units in bigger Audis. Higher output GB cars use a wet clutch S tronic.

Front wheel drive or quattro

Almost every A1 is front wheel drive. The S1 has quattro, and so did a limited run A1 quattro in 2012. A quattro A1 should show the 1X1 code on its data sticker.

Why it matters

A 1.0 TFSI manual city car and a 2.0 TFSI S1 wear the same badge and share the same model code. They're opposite ends of the range on running costs, insurance and value. Confirm the engine and gearbox first, then worry about wheels and trim.

SetupWhat it isWhat it means for a buyer
Manual5 or 6 speedSimple and cheap to maintain. Common on early 8X cars and the only gearbox offered on the S1.
S tronic DQ2007 speed dry clutchThe most common A1 automatic. Smooth and efficient, but the one to research hardest. Look for a clean shift from standstill and evidence of any mechatronic or clutch work.
S tronic, wet clutchHigher torque dual clutchUsed on higher output GB cars. Handles more torque than the DQ200 and needs its fluid changed on schedule.
quattroAll wheel driveS1 and the limited A1 quattro only. More grip and more appeal, with higher running costs to match.

Audi A1 Common Problems by Engine and Gearbox

Known issues depend on the exact engine and gearbox, which is why confirming them from the VIN and data sticker comes first.

Engine or eraWhat to look forWhy it matters
1.2 TFSI and early 1.4 TFSI (8X)Timing chain wear, oil use, patchy servicingA cheap early A1 can get expensive fast if timing work has been ignored. Check the history for chain or tensioner work.
7 speed S tronic DQ200Hesitation, judder from standstill, mechatronic faultsThe biggest A1 buying risk. Confirm the gearbox and look for evidence of repairs or software updates.
1.4 and 1.5 TFSI with Cylinder on DemandRough running at light load, system faultsGreat on fuel, but more sensitive to maintenance. The data sticker confirms if the car has it.
S1 2.0 TFSI quattroClutch, brakes, tyres and quattro components working harderA genuine S1 carries higher running costs. Many are modified, so check for remaps and non standard parts.
GB (2018 onward)Lower mechanical risk, wide spec differencesThe bigger risk is paying top money for a low spec car dressed up to look like a higher trim.

How to Check Audi A1 Recalls

US recall databases don't cover the A1, so check through the channels that do.

In the UK

Use the DVSA vehicle recall checker on GOV.UK with the make, model and year, then ask any Audi dealer to run the VIN for open campaigns.

Elsewhere in Europe

An Audi dealer can check the VIN against open campaigns in any market. Ask for proof that recall work was completed, not just booked.

Older A1s often rely on paperwork for recall history. If there's no record of the work being done, assume it still needs checking.

Audi A1 Wheel and Tyre Sizes

Wheels are easy to swap, so compare what's on the car with what it left the factory with. Wrong sizes or budget tyres change how an A1 rides and handles.

Wheel sizeCommon tyre sizeTypical on

Audi A1 VIN Decoder FAQs

Where is the VIN number on an Audi A1?

At the bottom of the windscreen, on the data sticker in the spare wheel well and service book, and stamped into the body in the engine bay. It's also on the V5C logbook in the UK.

Can I decode an Audi A1 VIN online?

Only partly. Most free decoders use US data, and the A1 was never sold in the US, so they usually return little or nothing. You can read the generation and model year from the VIN yourself using the guide above, then decode the PR codes for the full spec.

Was the Audi A1 sold in the US?

No. The A1 and S1 were sold in the UK, Europe and other markets, but never officially in the US.

How do I tell an 8X A1 from a GB A1?

Look at positions 7 and 8 of the VIN. 8X is the first generation, including the S1. GB is the second generation from 2018 onward.

How do I find out what options my Audi A1 has?

Read the PR codes from the data sticker in the spare wheel well or service book and paste them into the decoder above. An Audi dealer can also print the full factory spec from your VIN.

Where is the Audi A1 PR code sticker?

Under the boot floor in the spare wheel well, with a copy inside the front of the service book.

Can the VIN confirm S line or Black Edition?

Not on its own. The VIN confirms the model and year. Trim and styling packs show up in the PR codes and on the dealer printout.

How do I know if an Audi S1 is genuine?

A real S1 has the 8X model code, a 2.0 TFSI engine, the 1X1 quattro code on its data sticker and a manual gearbox. The dealer printout will confirm it. Badges and bodywork prove nothing.

Does the Audi A1 have quattro?

Only the S1 and a limited run A1 quattro from 2012. Every other A1 is front wheel drive.

How do I check recalls on a UK Audi A1?

Use the DVSA vehicle recall checker on GOV.UK, and ask an Audi dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns.
