There are three documents people mean when they say Dodge build sheet. Here's what each one shows and how to get it.
Package names and prices
The original Monroney sticker lists the trim, every package like Plus or Widebody, standalone options and MSRP. Stellantis has made window stickers available by VIN for many recent vehicles, and any Dodge dealer can print one for you.
Every option as a code
The production record lists each sales code: engine, transmission, axle, paint, packages and individual options. Ask a Dodge or Ram dealer to pull it from the VIN, then decode the codes below.
Classic Mopars
On older Dodges, the paper broadcast sheet was often left under the seat springs or the carpet, and a metal fender tag carries the key codes. See the classic section further down.
Some websites sell Dodge build sheets by VIN. They pull from the same factory data, so check the price against what a dealer will print for free.
On a modern Dodge, character 8 is the engine, which is the fastest way to tell a V6 from a 392 or a Hellcat. This 2021 Challenger R/T Scat Pack shows how it works.
2C3CDZFJ7MH024680: 2021 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack, 6.4 HEMI, built in Brampton, Ontario
| Character 8 | Engine | Found on |
|---|---|---|
| G | 3.6 Pentastar V6 | SXT, GT and Durango base models |
| T | 5.7 HEMI V8 | R/T and Durango R/T |
| J | 6.4 HEMI V8, the 392 | Scat Pack, SRT 392 and Durango SRT 392 |
| 9 | 6.2 supercharged HEMI V8 | SRT Hellcat, Redeye, Jailbreak and Durango SRT Hellcat |
Hellcat badges and hood scoops are easy to buy. A 9 in character 8 isn't. If a "Hellcat" shows a T or G there, it's a clone.

Dodge muscle cars are the most cloned cars in the used market. Badges, stripes, hoods and even widebody fender flares are sold as kits. Two checks clear up almost every case.
Check 1
A Scat Pack or SRT 392 must show J in character 8. Every Hellcat, Redeye and Jailbreak must show 9. A T is a 5.7 R/T and a G is a V6, whatever the car is wearing.
Check 2
Widebody, Redeye, Jailbreak, Plus, Brembo brakes and the Dynamics or Performance packages are listed by name. If the paperwork doesn't show them, the car wasn't built with them.
The paint code is on the label in the driver door opening, and it also shows on the build sheet as a sales code. These are the modern Dodge colors you'll see most, plus the high impact heritage colors that buyers pay extra for.
PW7
Dodge's white. Older and Ram models list it as Bright White.
PX8
The most common Dodge color.
PAU
Dark metallic grey.
PDN
Flat look grey, very popular on Scat Pack and Hellcat cars.
PAR
Blue grey metallic.
PCA
Mid blue pearl.
PBX
Deep blue pearl.
PQD
Bright heritage blue, a high impact color.
PR3
Heritage orange red, a high impact color.
PRY
Tri coat red, a paid upgrade.
PRV
Dark red pearl.
PHG
The best known Mopar heritage color.
PFB
Heritage lime green, a high impact color.
PFQ
Dark olive metallic, a high impact color.
PVP
Heritage orange, a high impact color.
PEC
Burnt orange metallic.
Swatches are a close screen match, not a paint match. Always order touch up paint by the code on your door label.
Dodges built before 1981 don't have 17 character VINs, and our decoder can't read them. Their story lives on paper and metal instead.
The broadcast sheet was the factory's build sheet, and it often stayed with the car, tucked under the seat springs, behind the rear seat or under the carpet. Finding one is a big deal for originality and value. The fender tag, a stamped metal plate in the engine bay, carries the paint, trim and key option codes. Mopar clubs and specialist registries can help decode both and confirm a car's original numbers.
Once character 8 tells you the engine, these are the issues worth asking about before you buy.
| Engine or model | Watch for | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6 Pentastar V6 | Leaking oil filter housing and cooler, rocker arm tick on early engines | Oil on the back of the engine and a ticking sound at idle. Ask if the housing has been replaced. |
| 5.7 HEMI V8 | Lifter and camshaft failure, the HEMI tick | Listen at cold start. A persistent tick with a misfire code needs a proper diagnosis before you buy. |
| 6.4 and 6.2 supercharged HEMI | Hard use, tuning and launches | Ask about modifications and drag strip use. Check the clutch or transmission and the rear tires. |
| Journey and Grand Caravan | Transmission and electrical complaints on high mileage examples | Test every gear and every power feature, including sliding doors. |
| Dart 2.4 Tigershark | Oil consumption | Check the oil level and ask how often it needs topping up. |
Our decoder lists NHTSA recall records for the model and year. For the exact vehicle, enter the full VIN on Mopar's recall lookup or NHTSA's site. Any Dodge or Ram dealer does recall work free, including on cars bought used or imported from Canada.
The sales codes in our decoder. Paint codes are the ones you'll use most, for touch ups and to confirm a rare original color.
Engine sales codes vary by year, so use VIN character 8 as a cross check. Axle ratio, transmission and package codes change by model and year, and your build sheet names them in full.
High impact colors like Plum Crazy, Sublime and Go Mango were offered in limited years, which makes the code a good originality check.
A Dodge or Ram dealer can pull the factory build record and reprint the window sticker from the VIN. For many recent vehicles, Stellantis has also made window stickers available by VIN online.
No. A VIN decoder confirms the model, year, engine and plant. The options are on the window sticker and the build sheet.
Three character factory codes for each piece of equipment, like EZH for the 5.7 HEMI or PHG for Plum Crazy paint. They appear on the build sheet.
Character 8 of the VIN should be 9, for the supercharged 6.2 HEMI. Then confirm the trim on the window sticker or build sheet.
Character 8. On a Challenger, G is the V6, T the 5.7, J the 6.4 and 9 the supercharged 6.2.
Ram became its own brand for the 2011 model year. Earlier trucks were Dodge Rams with VINs starting 1D7 or 3D7. Later Ram VINs start 1C6, 3C6 or 3C7, and our decoder reads both.
The factory build sheet on older Dodges and other Mopars. It was often left inside the car under a seat or carpet and lists the codes the car was built with.
On the label in the driver door opening on modern Dodges, as a code like PW7 for White Knuckle or PHG for Plum Crazy. Older Mopars carry it on the fender tag.
On the dash at the bottom of the windshield on the driver side, on the driver door jamb label, and on the title and registration.
